The Era of Transforming Dreams into Reality: My take on life at Graphic Era

“Graphic Era?”

“Graphic Era.”

This is how the conversation went inside my head while my month-long search for a college came to an end. I finally had a place to go to for my higher education but I didn’t really know how to feel about this place.

Having wanted to go Delhi University(like any other arts aspirant), I was pretty excited to go out of my hometown and breaking my cocoon of comfort-zone , but God had different plans for me. I stayed in Doon and decided to study here and amass further knowledge in my field of interest, that is, English literature. The only university in Dehradun to offer a major in this subject is Graphic Era Hill University and hence, it became my one and only choice. In the month of July, when college admissions are at their peak, I consulted the admission officer of GEHU and  joined the GEHU family.

My first day at college was a very strange experience; to be sitting in a hall brimming with people I am yet to know and seniors who are yet to guide me. After the three day orientation session and learning a few names and faces, the real deal began. We were shown our classes and our teachers for the first time and was really relieved to find that the teachers from our department are very approachable.

Initially I felt lonely as it took some time for me to adjust and make some new friends, but it didn’t take long for me to find like-minded people to hangout with. College life is infamous for various instances of ragging and it was the only thing I was worried  about, but after meeting my seniors here, I realized that quality education and discipline inculcated in them didn’t promote inappropriate behaviour in and outside the campus. Also, there are various “Anti Ragging” helpdesks setup throughout the campus to report and seek help regarding such issues if any occur.

I found the easy access to higher authorities the most impressive and unique feature about the university. The Vice Chancellor of GEHU has his “open-to-all office”on the first floor of the main building with a suggestion box right outside it. In my first week at GEHU, our respected vice chancellor gave us his email address to contact him for ANY problem for request, and in my personal experience, he really hears out others.

I wasn’t sure if this place would suit me, but now that I am getting along with everyone and enjoying the mot awaited phase of one’s life, “college life”.
